Private risk management is a relationship-centered profession built on trust, discretion, technical expertise, and the ability to understand client context.
This session will explore how curiosity, careful listening, and intentional communication can help professionals build stronger relationships with clients, colleagues, and referral partners. Rather than approaching the topic through politicized language, the session will focus on practical professional behaviors that support trust, service excellence, and constructive engagement across difference.
Participants will consider how family dynamics, values, communication preferences, cultural background, geography, worldview, lived experience, and expectations can shape client relationships and decision-making. The session will provide participants with a practical framework for leading with curiosity in high-trust professional environments.
This session aligns with PRMA’s role as a professional association supporting excellence in private risk management. It offers members a practical, nonpartisan approach to strengthening client service, communication, and professional relationships. The topic is especially relevant for professionals working with successful individuals and families whose needs may be complex, personal, multi-generational, and shaped by varied values and expectations.
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
• Explain why curiosity is an essential professional skill in trust-based client relationships.
• Identify common assumptions that can weaken communication and client trust.
• Use practical questions to better understand client values, needs, concerns, and decision-making contexts.
• Apply a simple communication model for navigating complex or sensitive conversations.
• Strengthen trust with clients, colleagues, and partners through listening, clarification, and contextual awareness.
